Bald Mountain Summer Map

My favorite ski lift: Challenger – Bottom to the Top (up 3,140′ vertical) in 8 minutes! And there is never a line (except during Christmas, New Year’s and President’s Holidays). There are no ski lifts in Tahoe that even come close to the speed and elevation that the Challenger lift provides.

The Challenger Quad was built in 1988 and served well for 35 years! It was replaced with the Challenger Six-Pack in 2023. Check out my tribute video Goodbye Challenger Quad and my welcome video for the new 6-Pack lift Hello Challenger Six-Pack!

AND! They just tore down the Seattle Ridge Quad lift and are replacing it with a Six-Pack that will be ready by December 2024 – Yeehaw! Check out the plans and progress here!

Both of Sun Valley’s base areas have beautiful day lodges with excellent restaurants and bars that will keep you comfortable even on the coldest days. There’s one at the River Run side and another at the Warm Springs side of Bald Mountain. Both day lodges have plenty of free parking!

The River Run base area is where most visitors go as it is the closest upon arrival and has the biggest parking lot. Plus there’s a free parking lot shuttle service so you don’t have to walk from your car to the lodge. I suggest dropping your gear off then parking your car, who wants to carry all that stuff? There is a small reserved lot with short term parking near the lodge so you can drop off your gear, then move your car to the parking lot.

Once back in March 2007 about 8:15am my brother Dave convinced me to drive my then almost new 2006 Subaru Legacy GT over the bridge that leads to the River Run day lodge so he could cash in a voucher without having to walk in the cold. A Sun Valley employee told me: “Tim wouldn’t like to see your car here!” I always wished I would have taken a picture of the car there that morning!

Although the River Run lodge is the biggest, both day lodges provide plenty of room to get ready, get something to eat or drink, or just plain relax. Before 2020 you could leave your boot bag(s), etc. laying around pretty much anywhere at either lodge, but you’re not supposed to do that anymore. Now there’s a bag check station at the River Run side which cost like $5 a day.

Thing’s are a little bit more relaxed at the Warm Springs side. The Warm Springs day lodge has some cubbyholes on the second floor where you can store your boot bag and shoes, etc. for free. The parking lot is a little closer to the lodge than at the River Run side, so there is no parking lot shuttle.

Food and drink options on the mountain are plenty! Both Baldy’s base lodges have excellent cafeteria style restaurants and full bars. The Seattle Ridge day lodge at the top of Seattle Ridge is an excellent place to take an early break or have lunch.

The views of Idaho’s Sawtooth mountain range from the Seattle Ridge Day Lodge are hard to beat!

The Lookout Lodge Restaurant located at the top where the Challenger, Lookout Express and Christmas ski lifts all meet is a great refuge & gathering spot always kept nice and warm with lots of heaters! Sometimes in January when it’s like minus six degrees outside even a ten minute lift ride will take a toll. There’s nothing like a warm lodge and hot chocolate/coffee to get you going again!

SunValley.com says: Perched atop the Roundhouse Express gondola at 7,700 feet of elevation on Bald Mountain, The Roundhouse has been serving up memorable meals, soul-warming drinks, and stunning views since 1939. The Roundhouse is America’s original on-mountain dining experience and offers the authentic charm and unmatched elegance for which Sun Valley is known.

I love to start out early at the Warm Springs side when I go skiing at Sun Valley. I usually get on the Challenger lift as close to 9am as I can and then head over to Seattle Ridge. The deal is, Seattle Ridge gets the early Sunshine and the Warm Springs side is in shadow until later in the morning, so Seattle Ridge has the best early morning skiing at Sun Valley!

If the Lookout lift is open, I’ll ride it to Bald’s Summit and then ski down the Bowl Lane trail to Broadway Face, turn left and ski down Broadway then get on the Seattle Ridge lift. If the Lookout lift is closed there’s a bunch of other ways to get over to Seattle Ridge, you’ll have to look at the map and pick one for yourself!

If you started early enough you will be faced with nearly trackless corduroy, one of my life goals!

There’s nothing like sipping on a local cold draft beer while sitting at the Warm Springs lodge bar (or outside on the patio) after a fun day of skiing, the view of the Lower Warm Springs ski run is awesome!

Dollar Mountain is the ideal place to learn how to ski or snow board! It is a super laid back, fun & easy place to learn!

Please stay on Dollar Mountain until you can ski or ride in total control as skiing on Bald Mountain is very dangerous for novice skiers and riders, and for the other folks on the mountain too!

I should know, I got hit by a six year old kid March 25th, 2022 on Baldy’s Cut Off run. The six year old boy broadsided me because he wasn’t paying attention, didn’t see me and was basically out of control and did not belong on Baldy Mountain at all. He should have been skiing on Dollar Mountain until he was able to understand the rules and ski under control.

The accident left me with a completely torn ACL, a torn MCL and a smashed meniscus. It was a total drag, but after pre-surgery physical therapy and daily home work therapist directed exercise, I had surgery in June.

Luckly the highly experienced Sports Medicine Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Peter G. Gerbino II MD performed my ACL surgery. Then after more physical therapy and even more daily home work therapist directed exercise, and after massive effort I’m finally okay now, and can ski again!

I do have to wear an Ossur CTi Knee Brace for the next couples years when I go skiing or Mt. Biking. Dr. Gerbino told me it’s the same knee brace that Tom Brady used to wear while playing football!

I’m very interested in Stoko’s new ‘Supportive Apparel’ line of leggings with 90 feet of adjustable high-Strength cables that reinforce your body’s muscles and ligaments, providing medical-grade bracing – they say! Sounds great to me. The Ossur brace is a little bulky…

Sun Valley Lodging

The good news is, you will find lodging options in the Sun Valley/Ketchum area to fit almost any budget. We stayed at the Sun Valley Lodge in 2014 right before they remodeled the entire building. It was a blast, all the history, all the old photos of celebrities on the walls, super fine food and accommodations. Now I understand it’s even better! Be sure and check out Sun Valley’s available ‘Specials & Packages’!

One year not long ago I got an AIRBNB condo for my wife & I, and our daughter & her friend at 119 Picabo St. and we could see the Challenger lift from one of our bedrooms! It only took a minute or two to walk from the condo to the lifts. That was a fun and expensive year. You can’t get much closer than that, and it was worth every cent!

I love to ski at Sun Valley in January when it’s cold, but my wife hates it when it’s that cold so I go by myself. I like to stay in Hailey or Bellevue, it’s about a half an hour drive to Warm Springs but I usually get up early anyway. I like the Hailey Airport Inn as the rooms are nice and it’s always quiet there.

I also like the Silver Creek Hotel in Bellevue, they have an excellent free breakfast bar, and a year round hot tub and swimming pool!

This is an excellent place to stay as it is very close to Bald Mountain’s River Run Day Lodge. The Best Western Tyrolean Lodge has nice sized rooms, some with decks and many with views of Bald Mountain.

That’s all the places I’ve actually stayed at except way back when I used to stay with my brother Dave, and then later I stayed at several AIRBNBs close to Warm Springs and also in Hailey & Bellevue. And I can’t forget the Ski View Lodge which is gone now, replaced with condos.

In addition to all the food and drink options on the mountain and at the base lodges, right across the street from the Warm Springs Day lodge is Irving’s Red Hots. Great hot dogs and more with a smile! Easy on the wallet too.

Just a couple minute walk from the Warm Springs Day lodge you’ll find Apples Bar & Grill, a local favorite for over 35 years. A delicious menu and an excellent beer selection await you!

Another local favorite since 1993 is Lefty’s Bar and Grill. Lefty’s is where I used to hang with my brother Dave and his buddy Barney before Dave passed in July 2012.

Lefty’s has some of the best food and beer in town, a very relaxed atmosphere, and the staff and locals are friendly and fun to hang out with. The Monkey Fries are a must! I love Lefty’s! Lefty’s was the second place I went (first was the hospital) when my ACL was completely torn after I got hit by a six-year-old kid skiing on Bald Mountain’s Cut Off run on March 25, 2022.

The Warm Springs Ranch Restaurant that closed back in March 2006 was a place I would go at least once every visit to Sun Valley. My brother Dave built the bar there. The scones with honey butter and the Prime Rib were the best! Esteemed locals Bob and Jolie Dunn continue the tradition at The Grill at Knob Hill.

An excellent local beer selection along with a deliciously tasty menu equals total satisfaction at The Village Station. One of my favorites!

Another must place to visit is Grumpy’s, home of the best damn burgers and beer in town! My brother Dave and his buddy Barney actually lived in the building that became Grumpy’s and later worked on the construction of the future iconic apres-ski restaurant and bar.

One of my favorite local brewers is Hailey’s Sawtooth Brewery. The Public House in Ketchum is open at 11:30am for lunch and dinner and the Brewery & Tap Room in Hailey opens at 4pm for dinner. The food is excellent and the beer is the best! I always pick up a few cases at the brewery on my way home.

There are so many excellent places to eat and drink in the Ketchum/Sun Valley area, it would take me way too long to describe them all in detail. So below is a list and some links to help you find what is available. Enjoy!

Once again, I’m all about the Mountain Collective pass for the 2024-2025 ski season! My plan is to re-visit each of The Mountain Collective’s 11 U.S. West Ski Resorts featured on this web site again in 2025!

I learned quite a bit the winter of 2024. Mainly, that weather can force you to change your plans. Last year my plan was to visit all eleven U.S. West Mountain Collective ski resorts in a six-week period, skiing only on Mondays & Tuesdays and Thursdays & Fridays, traveling on Wednesdays & Saturdays, and resting on Sundays.

It didn’t quite work out like the way I had planned. During parts of my trip last year heavy snowfall made it too dangerous or almost impossible to drive or to ski, destroying my precious plans. Luckily, it wasn’t too difficult to re-book my remaining reservations (multiple times). And the heavy snowfall made for great skiing!

I still believe that making reservations way ahead of time is the way to go, but you’ve got to be sure there’s enough flexibility to change your reservations if and when needed. It’s a good idea to keep all your reservations in a binder for easy access, just in case you need to contact a hotel directly.

Great news – Sun Valley is an Ikon Pass member for the 2024-2025 season! No Reservations needed!

A fun thing to do on a rest day is to go ice skating as the ice rink at the Sun Valley Lodge is usually open and not crowded.

After skating it’s fun to walk around the Sun Valley Village and check out all the shops and food & drink options.

One place I like to visit is the Sun Valley Signatures & Gifts store as they have all the cool Sun Valley logo souvenirs, t-shirts, hats, mugs, stickers, and much more!

Here I am at the Hemingway Memorial which is about 1.5 miles east of the Sun Valley Lodge. When the snow is deep it may be hard to get to, but worth it.

If the snow is not too deep you can go for a short walk from the Hemingway Memorial on the Hemingway Trail overlooking the gently flowing Trail Creek.

I’m kind of reluctant to give away all my Sun Valley secrets, but here it goes anyway! This is a good one so take advantage. I never had a new pair of skis in my life until 2021 as I always got all my skis at the Gold Mine Thrift Store in Ketchum. You will find great deals on ski boots, helmets, jackets, and usually a wide variety of slightly used skis to pick from!

A little more history…

The Ketchum News Stand was a bar that was located where the China Panda Restaurant is now (I’m pretty sure). My brother Dave and his best buddy Barney were bartenders there in the mid to late 1970s.

Back in 1973 my brother Dave was hitch-hiking through Idaho heading to Coeur d’Alene where our dad was living, when Jack Corrock picked him up. Evidently, they hit it off as Jack offered Dave a job.

Dave came back to Ketchum six months later, went to work for Jack and never left. I had to go to Ketchum to visit Dave. Dave ended up helping Jack build the Limelight condos that recently burned down, in addition to many, many other every day construction projects.

Just to name a few, Dave also worked on some high-end homes as a sheet-rocker, framer, custom finish carpenter, etc. on jobs like the giant W shaped Wrigley home, Arnold Schwarzenegger’s home, Clint Eastwood’s home and many, many others.

After Dave passed, I rented an AIRBNB at the old Limelight condos and instantly after walking in I knew Dave had remodeled the unit. All the custom woodwork had his name written all over it. I made it a habit to stay there, when I could. Now it’s gone, just like Dave…

But not really, Dave is always with me in spirit! Furthermore, in January 2013 my daughter Hailey and I along with Barney Ogden, Anne and Jack Corrock, Tom Barker and a few other friends went skiing and spread Dave’s ashes on Bald Mountain.

Then in August 2017 my other brother Bill passed, so once again we went skiing in January 2018 and spread Bill’s ashes on Bald Mountain.

Now I go back to Bald Mountain as often as I can to visit my brothers Bill and Dave, and to enjoy the best skiing in the world – as I’m sure my brothers would want me to do!

Having fun skiing and gatekeeping for four days of FIS Ski Races at Sun Valley, Idaho January 10-13, 2022. After checking in at 7:45am on Tuesday January 11th I learned the start of the first race was delayed to 10:45am and our meeting time at the top of Cozy was not until 10:15am. So, I got on Challenger at 8:15am and skied on completely empty pure corduroy runs by myself! What a blast!!

Travel to Snowbasin, Utah

I’ve been to Snowbasin only twice, once in 2020 and again in 2021. But wow, I loved it! I really enjoyed the pitch and wide-open runs below the Strawberry Gondola – Elk Ridge, Sun King, Wolverine, Coyote Bowl, Main Street and more! What a blast!

The Snowbasin base area has everything you need starting at the Grizzly Center where you can find the Rental Gear of your choice, schedule a Private Lesson or an Adult Group Lesson, get last minute adjustments and pick up needed items. Close by is Earl’s Lodge and The Cinnabar where drinks, snacks and or lunch can be enjoyed inside or on the patio with mountain side views!

Pizza, Burgers, Chicken Sandwich, Hot Dogs, Fries, Chips and Beer can all be had at the Strawberry Gondola’s slopeside patio dining.

Ride the Needles Gondola up to 8,700 feet elevation to the Needles Lodge and enjoy some great food! Reservations are recommended. Also located at the Needles Lodge offering extraordinary views of Snowbasin Resort and Ogden Valley is The Overlook Bar and Restaurant (for those 21 and over).

Ride the John Paul Express high speed quad chair lift to the John Paul Lodge to enjoy some breath taking panoramic views and excellent food options. Coffee and pastries are available 9am – 3pm, Waffles: 10am – 3pm. Delectable sandwiches, grilled meats, and fresh salads for lunch are available between 11am and 3pm.

Snowbasin Lodging

The unique thing about Snowbasin Resort is there is no on-site lodging at all. Everyone has to drive to the resort. The closest town is Huntsville which is 10 miles away. AIRBNBs are available in Huntsville but there are no Hotels.

This is one of the closest Hotels to Snowbasin Resort at just 16 miles. It’s in South Ogden close to Uintah. I’ve stayed here before and it was nice. I will probably stay here again.

Here’s a place I’d like to stay! Full breakfast, Spa, In Room Jacuzzi, all at such a beautiful location – looks like fun to me!

One of the great things about snow skiing in Utah along with the light & fluffy snow is the vast number of lodging options to choose from. The info on Snowbasin’s Lodging web page is a great resource I highly recommend! And there is always Google of course.

Snowbasin Food & Drink

Here’s a fun and historic Food & Drink venue they say is the oldest continuously operating Saloon west of the Mississippi, Est. 1879. The Shooting Star Saloon keeps things simple with Burgers, Beers, Soda and Chips. NO Fries!!

Enjoy a delicious breakfast while viewing the stunning beauty of the Ogden River that is on full display at this quaint riverside grill. Open seven days a week for breakfast and only Friday nights for dinner, the Hermitage Grill is not to be missed!

Similar to lodging, there’s a Food & Drink option to please every craving in the Snowbasin area. Good luck deciding!

Snowbasin Other Info & Stuff To Do!

Diamond Peaks Heli-Ski Adventures: This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that will take you skiing or snowboarding in some of the most pristine powder in the world.

Huntsville Astronomic and Lunar Observatory or HALO: This observatory is home to a 16-inch telescope that you can use to view the stars, planets, and other celestial objects.

Utah Detours: This outdoor adventure company offers a variety of activities, including rock climbing, mountain biking, and hiking. They also have a zipline tour that takes you over the Ogden Valley.

Historic 25th Street: This historic district in Ogden is home to a variety of shops, restaurants, and art galleries. You can also visit the Ogden Union Station, a beautiful train depot that is now a museum.

Hill Aerospace Museum: This museum is home to a collection of aircraft, missiles, and other military artifacts. You can also take a guided tour of the Ogden Air Logistics Complex, which is one of the largest Air Force bases in the world.

Travel to Jackson Hole, Wyoming

Wow! Jackson Hole is massive! I can’t wait to check this place out. JacksonHole.com says: “Welcome to Teton Village, where a distinctive western American hospitality welcomes guests from across North America and around the world. Our first-class culinary offerings are matched by a range of lodging opportunities including luxurious slope side resorts, homes and condominiums. ‘The Village’, as it’s coined by locals, is also home to shops, spas and a variety of activities that accommodate all tastes and budgets”.

2024: The weather was nice and sunny and skiing conditions were great at Jackson Hole, except it was a tad bit chilly out – minus nine degrees first thing in the morning! The super fluffy snow, long runs, fast lifts and friendly locals made my time at Jackson hole one to remember. I had a bunch of fun at Jackson Hole and can’t wait to go back and do it again next year – Yeehaw!

I’m going to have ride the Aerial Tram again to the Rendezvous Mountain summit at 10,450′ so I can try the ‘Top Of The World Waffles’ in Corbet’s Cabin. I tried in 2024, but the place was completely packed.

Another great on the mountain food & drink option is the Rendezvous Alpine Kitchen which is at the top of the Bridger Gondola.

JacksonHole.com says: Located at the summit of the Bridger Gondola, Rendezvous Alpine Kitchen is Jackson Hole’s best spot for stunning views, full bar, and delicious food. The restaurant has impressive views of the summit of Rendezvous Mountain and the famous “Corbet’s Couloir” from the south-facing deck. The deck is a perfect spot to sit back and relax on sunny days and spring skiing lunch breaks.

JacksonHole.com says: Solitude Station provides an enhanced Mountain Sports School experience for children 8 years and older and adult lessons for all ability levels. There are two cafeteria style dining rooms for JHMR Mountain Sports School participants and their families during the ski day. 

New in 2024 – the Solitude north cafeteria is open to guests for food and drinks Winter 24-25 TBA from TBA !  Seating is limited, reservations recommended.

Jackson Hole Lodging

Early in January 2024 was my first winter skiing at Jackson Hole, WY and it was cold! Minus nine degrees Fahrenheit one morning. Luckily, I stayed in a private slopeside room at The Hostel Jackson Hole. It was great being there in the morning without having to drive in. It’s a short walk up a nice paver path from your room to get to the ski lifts, but you can ski on the way back, Yeehaw!

This place looks like fun! I understand they play both kinds of music, Country and Western! Located in the heart of Jackson at the town square, The Million Dollar Cowboy Bar is Wyoming’s landmark watering hole.

Right downstairs from the bar is The Million Dollar Cowboy Steakhouse featuring choice cuts of meats, seafood as well as an extensive cocktail and wine list. This is a Jackson Hole experience you simply can’t miss!

The National Elk Refuge in Jackson Hole was established in 1912 after the photography of Stephen Leek inspired public interest in preserving a part of the traditional winter range of the area elk population.

Take a sleigh ride offered by Double H Bar, Inc. on your rest day and see thousands of wintering Elk at The National Elk Refuge near Jackson Hole.

This is something I’d like to try on a day off. Go Snowmobiling! Jackson Hole Adventure Rentals has two locations with everything you need.

Head to the Snow King Mountain or other nearby resorts that offer snow tubing. Climb aboard an inflated tube and zoom down the specially designed slopes, providing thrilling rides for all ages.

Teton Village Rink on the Commons

The Village Rink on the Commons at the base of Jackson Hole Mountain Resort is one of Teton Village’s newest additions. Olympic ice skating medalist Nancy Kerrigan sprinkled a bit of skating magic across its ice during a recent ski trip here! After a day on the slopes, this ice skating rink is super convenient for you and your family to keep the fun going.

Hours: Skating is free anytime, 7 days a week if you have your own skates. It is manned from 3 to 9 p.m. daily. Rentals ($15) are available in the warming hut.

Rink on the Town Square

“Winter Wonderland” (pictured above) is the perfect name for this enchanting skating pond located literally on Jackson Hole’s Town Square, surrounded by the four famous elk antler arches. When the sun goes down, the twinkling lights on the arches create a true winter wonderland atmosphere indeed.

Hours: Skating is free anytime, 7 days a week if you have your own skates. The rink is manned from 4:30 to 9 p.m. Monday to Friday and noon to 9 p.m. on weekends. Free hot chocolate and skate rentals ($15) are available in the Stage Stop building.

Snow King Sports & Events Center

Snow King Sports and Events Center ice arena offers public ice skating Monday to Friday, from noon to 1:30 p.m. Cost: adults $8/kids $6; rentals $5. The arena is located at the base of Snow King Mountain Resort.

If you’d rather watch ice skating of the competitive sort, i.e. hockey, The Jackson Hole Moose play a 30-game home schedule at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday nights throughout the winter at the events center arena. Cost: adults $10/kids $5.

Snowshoeing: Explore the serene winter landscapes by strapping on a pair of snowshoes and trekking through the scenic trails. You can rent snowshoes locally and embark on guided or self-guided adventures.

Dog Sledding is a fun and unique way to see the winter landscape of Jackson Hole. You’ll get to mush your own team of dogs through the snow and experience the thrill of being pulled by these amazing animals! Continental Divide Dog Sled Adventures is ready to help.

Travel to Grand Targhee, Wyoming

FYI: Grand Targhee has restrooms at the top of the Sacajawea Lift and the base of the Blackfoot Lift, but there are no on mountain lodges. Food & drink as well as shelter and restrooms can be found at the Targhee Main Plaza base lodge area.

2024: Last year the night before I visited Grand Targhee Resort, it snowed over 16 inches. So, my first day at the Ghee fresh pow was the thing. Too bad for me I’m not that good at skiing fresh deep powder, and I nearly killed myself trying!

The next day I was so beat up I could barely ski. I’m hoping next year I’ll get lucky and there will be fresh snow the day before I come, but the snow will stop in the afternoon so the groomers can work all night. I love freshly groomed ski runs in the morning, Yeehaw!

Prior to 2024: I’ve been skiing at Grand Targhee only once back in the early 90s. On that trip I had been skiing at Sun Valley with my brother Dave and Barney bumming vouchers off them, but they had to get back to work on a job that couldn’t wait.

That’s when Dave suggested I drive over to Driggs, Idaho and go skiing at Grand Targhee. At the time Grand Targhee’s lift tickets cost less than half of what Sun Valley’s cost so I did it. To be honest though, I can barely remember skiing at Grand Targhee. I do remember the town of Driggs being very small…

Travel to Big Sky, Montana

It took a while to orientate myself to this map after having studied the Big Sky Winter Main Trail Map first. Once I turned the above Mountain Village Streets Map a little more than 90 degrees clockwise it made more sense.

2024: I got lucky and enjoyed excellent weather and skiing conditions when I visited Big Sky last winter. I loved the super long gradual runs that seemed to go on forever. What a blast Big Sky is. I can’t wait to go back next year – Yeehaw!

Prior to 2024: Wow – This place is huge! I’ve been looking at the Big Sky Winter Main Trail Map for over an hour and am still trying to absorb it all. I visited Big Sky back in the summer of 2018 as a commercial drone pilot shooting a golf course but have never skied here. I’m looking forward to it – Big Time!

Located on Lone Mountain under the Shedhorn Lift on Middle Road at the Bottom of Sunlight Bowl. The Shedhorn Grill offers excellent Montana Wagyu burgers, Korobuta pork bratwurst fresh off the outdoor grill, famous beef tenderloin chili, or hot local made soup! A variety of Montana micro-brews, non-alcoholic beverages and other snacks are available!

The base area at Big Sky Mountain Village has a great deal to offer. Several dining options, a Basecamp, slopeside lodging, several Shopping options, a Spa & Recovery Lounge, a Fat Bike & Ski Rental shop, Private & Group Lessons, just about everything you might need is available at the Big Sky Mountain Village!

Travel to Taos, New Mexico

Winter Sports Shuttle: The Taos Ski Valley is happy to offer complimentary transportation between the Taos Regional Airport to The Blake (slopeside lodging), ensuring guests can reach the slopes without the need to drive.

By Train: While there’s no direct train service to Taos, you can take Amtrak to Albuquerque or Santa Fe and then proceed by car, bus, or shuttle.

2024: Once again, I got lucky and enjoyed excellent weather and skiing conditions when I visited Taos last winter.  The drive to the resort from Taos was memorable for me because of the way the mountain is revealed as you get closer, it was an absolutely beautiful, inspiring experience to witness, one that I will never forget.

Also, I loved the friendly laid-back attitude of the locals. And the skiing at Taos is awesome! No crowds, long runs that feel like they will never end, just what I like. I love Taos. I can’t wait to go back next year – Yeehaw!

Travel to Alta, Utah

I’ve been to Alta a few times through my years of skiing. Alta sits at the end of Highway 210. The dead-end road is 13 miles long, crosses 64 avalanche paths and has the highest highway avalanche hazard index of any major road in the United States, so be careful! It’s a stunning and beautiful ride, even for the most seasoned local, but must be treated with respect and caution during the winter months.

Parking at Alta

Parking reservations are required at Alta Ski Area and the Town of Alta: Friday-Sunday & Holidays from 8am-1pm. The parking reservation system provides Alta skiers the assurance that there will be a parking space before driving up the canyon as Alta skiers will no longer need to arrive hours before first chair to secure a parking spot. This eases early morning traffic congestion and manages the ski experience by limiting the number of skiers to available terrain & lift capacity.

Alta has two base areas. The first as you drive in is the Wildcat Base Area. Intermediate and expert skiers typically park in the Wildcat parking lot and use the Goldminer’s Daughter Lodge as their home base.

If you drive a short distance past the Wildcat Base Area you arrive at the Albion Base Area. The Albion Base Area is ideal for beginners, families and those who are enrolling in a ski lesson with the Alf Engen Ski School. The family-friendly Albion Grill is located in the Albion Day Lodge where you can get breakfast to fuel your morning or a delicious lunch to refuel midday, this slope-side cafeteria-style grill has you covered.

Alta.com says: Indoor and outdoor seating with beautiful views of Albion Basin and Devil’s Castle. Alf’s is one of the canyon’s most scenic lunch spots and has a great collection of antique skis on display courtesy of the Alf Engen Ski Museum. The Alta History display features photos from the late-1800s through the present. It is definitely worth your visit.

Alta.com says: The Watson Cafe is located mid-mountain in the Watson Shelter, next to the Collins angle station and below the top of the Wildcat lift. The Watson Cafe has two levels of indoor seating and an outdoor deck with incredible views. This is an excellent place for a midday refuel for intermediate to expert skiers.

Snowbird offers a variety of ways to park and enjoy the mountain, including the ability to park in free lots on a first-come, first-served basis, pay for reserved daily parking in advance or purchase a Preferred Parking Pass. 

Snowbird.com says: The Summit is Snowbird’s newest year-round guest facility located atop Hidden Peak at 11,000 feet. Just a few steps from the Aerial Tram, The Summit is accessible for any tram passenger whether on foot, skis or boards. Once inside The Summit, guests can choose to dine on either of the two levels, each providing different views of the surrounding Wasatch-Cache National Forest.

Mid-Gad Restaurant is located mid-mountain in Gad Valley, at the top of the Mid-Gad Chairlift. It can be accessed by skiing or riding down from Gad 2, Little Cloud and Gadzoom chairs and from the top of the Tram. Mid-Gad Restaurant always has spectacular down-canyon views, indoor/outdoor seating, restrooms and new, stronger, free wifi.

The great thing about skiing in the Salt Lake City area is all the lodging options! Pay as little or as much as you like on lodging.

Lodging is somewhat expensive close to Aspen Snowmass so I’m going to have to stay in Glenwood Springs which is about 43 miles away. I don’t mind, I’ll simply drive in each morning super early.

Reservation booking instructions:

1. Log into your Mountain Collective account to retrieve your voucher ID. Vouchers begin with MCP followed by a series of numbers. (ex: MCPXXXXXXXX)
2. Reservations can be booked using our online shop here. You may be prompted to login or create an Aspen Snowmass account.
3. Select a date using the calendar.
4. Once a date has been selected, you can input your Mountain Collective voucher ID into the validation box located on the product page and select ‘Validate’.
5. Once the voucher has been validated, you are then able to add the product to your shopping cart, and complete checkout.
6. To add multiple reservation dates, simply select a new date and then add to cart before completing checkout.

Multiple reservations:

• All reservations can be made using one Aspen Snowmass account.
• Reservations can be made for multiple guests in one purchase.
• When all desired dates have been added to the cart, select reset in the Mountain Collective validation box. This will allow you to paste a new voucher.

Weave in and out of serene spruce and fir forests as you take in Aspen’s majestic vistas from Richmond Ridge with a knowledgeable Naturalist on this two-hour guided snowshoe tour. Learn about wildlife in winter, mountain ecology, Aspen history, avalanches, and winter habitats. Tickets must be purchased in advance.

Located adjacent to the Elk Camp Restaurant, riders and passengers will be able to experience the thrilling ride during the day and during special Ullr Nights.

The Aspen Recreation Center, also known as the ‘ARC’, provides a variety of recreational opportunities for people of all ages. Join a pick-up game of hockey, participate in public ice skate, experience tots and youth art classes, attend youth karate classes, take swim lessons, or just kick back and float in our lazy river.

Enjoy our state-of-the-art fitness center featuring an aerobic studio, a media-enhanced cardio room, and a weight room. Our cardio room includes elliptical trainers, treadmills, several types of stationary bikes, stair climbers, and a rowing machine, each with its own television so you can enjoy your favorite shows while you work out. The weight room includes a wide variety of different resistance machines for toning and strengthening each part of your body.

Travel to Arapahoe Basin, Colorado

Local Transit:

• Summit Stage: This free bus service in Summit County offers a route to A-Basin from various parts of the county including Keystone, Dillon, and Silverthorne. The bus schedule adjusts seasonally, so it’s a good idea to check the current timetable.

Rideshare and Taxis:

• Companies like Uber and Lyft operate in the area, though availability may vary, especially during peak ski times. This could be an option if you’re traveling from nearby towns.

Ski Shuttles from Nearby Resorts:

• Some nearby resorts or lodging options might offer their own shuttles to A-Basin. If you’re staying in the area, inquire with your accommodation about potential shuttle services.

Rental Cars:

• Renting a car from DIA or other nearby locations gives you flexibility. As with other mountain drives, ensure you have a winter-ready vehicle, especially if you’re not accustomed to driving in snowy or icy conditions.

Remember, traveling in the mountains during winter requires extra caution. Road conditions can change rapidly, and areas like Loveland Pass (which you’ll traverse to get to A-Basin) can be particularly challenging. Molly Hogan is our learning area / ski school hill. Find it adjacent Mountain Goat Plaza (base area) at the bottom of the main lifts. Check out our lesson offerings.

The frontside greens and blues generally get steeper farther to skier’s left. (EX: Sundance is steeper than Wrangler; West Wall is steeper than Powerline).

The blue runs in The Beavers (Loafer, Davis) are the most difficult blue runs on the mountain due to their pitch, length, variability, and snow conditions.

Expert skiers and riders seeking untracked powder should explore the EX terrain below the lift. The return hike is only about 10 minutes.

Experts, only. Enter through open gates only (do not duck ropes; you will lose your pass).

Observe all signage and closures.

Rescue from this area can be difficult and time-consuming.

Do not hike above the traverse except in designated areas (Willies Wide, Tree Chutes). See these bootpack routes on the main frontside map above.

Expect hidden and unmarked obstacles, variable conditions, as with all expert terrain.

This terrain is conditions-dependent and requires a significant amount of mitigation work. It can open/close at any time. 

Marjorie Bowl is NOT part of Arapahoe Basin; it is outside our boundaries.

Our base area is compact and simple to navigate. Check out the map below before you go, or just explore on your own! Everything is a short walk from your car and from the lifts.

Find the new lift ticket pickup kiosks on the plaza-facing side of the season pass office, under the stage overhang. The base area is also where you can find our rental shop, dining areas, first aid, and more.

Arapahoe Basin Lodging

The Pad is a brand-new, affordable, high-amenity “boutique” hotel and hostel centrally located in Silverthorne and easily accessible from I-70. The Pad is independently owned and operated by longtime locals and friends of A-Basin. They have created a space that is chic, comfortable, environmentally and socially conscious, and efficient in design.

The Pad is located on the Blue River Bike Path and is walking distance to multiple local eateries and coffee shops, a large city park, the Silverthorne Rec Center, and the free Summit Stage Bus. Drive time to A-Basin is about 30 minutes. 

Right outside, you will find a lake that serves as a lovely skate pond. If you fancy a bit of tennis, there are a number of courts across the street. Complimentary shuttles will take you to the Keystone Village where you can take the Swan Mountain Flyer to Arapahoe Basin.

• Distance to Arapahoe Basin ski access: 6.2 miles.
• Within walking distance: restaurants, bars, cafes and an ice skating rink.
• Transportation: shuttles add convenience if using the Swan Mountain Flyer, however, a car would provide you with more freedom.

Located just off Highway 6, this hotel is an easy 6-mile drive from Arapahoe Basin ski area. Drive to the slopes or hop on the free Summit County shuttle at the River Run base area for the easiest access. There are a few restaurants within walking distance that are must-trys after a day on the slopes.

Just steps away from the shore of Lake Dillon and Dillon’s downtown area, this hotel is walking distance to several local restaurants and breweries. Arapahoe Basin is accessible via a 15-minute drive or a bus ride on the Summit Stage free buses.

Sugar Bowl has a variety of ways to park and enjoy the mountain including free lots with first-come-first-serve parking, a 10-minute drop-off zone, and preferred ski school and hotel parking. Make a plan to carpool whenever possible please.

Terrain Parks: The resort typically offers several terrain parks with varying features for different skill levels.

Backcountry Access: Sugar Bowl has access to some backcountry skiing areas, but like all backcountry adventures, it’s essential to be prepared and knowledgeable about the conditions.

This is excellent – Sugar Bowl has added an interactive map that shows which chair lifts are open or closed and which runs are groomed and ungroomed – and more. Very cool!

Hello and welcome to 11USWest.com! I’ve had a Mountain Collective Pass the last four years, but never really used it until 2024. In spring 2023 I acted on an idea I’ve had for a while to go skiing at all of the 11 U.S. western Mountain Collective ski resorts in one winter. So, I started gathering information on the other ten resorts, as I already know almost all I need to about Sun Valley, Idaho. Then it occurred to me, why not share all this information with the world? That’s how 11USWest.com was born!

Then I did it! Winter 2024 I skied all 11 of the U.S. western Mountain Collective ski resorts! First, I skied my home resort, Sun Valley, then Jackson Hole, Grand Targhee, Snowbasin, Big Sky, Taos, Arapahoe Basin, Aspen Snowmass, Alta, Snowbird, and finally, Sugar Bowl. What a blast I had! One of the best winters of my life! And I intend to do it again in 2025! Yeehaw!

I’ve been lucky to spend many winter vacations at Sun Valley, so I built 11USWest.com around my experience with family and friends (and info from SunValley.com!) and then used the same formula on the other ten U.S. West Mountain Collective ski resorts.

The fact is my brother Dave got me hooked on skiing at Sun Valley enticing me with free lift tickets and a free place to stay back in 1981. I’ve been returning to Sun Valley to go skiing multiple times a year since then and will continue this tradition as long as I am able to ski safely.

My plan to re-visit all 11 U.S. West Mountain Collective Resorts in 2025!

For the second year in a row, I’m all about the Mountain Collective ski pass for the 2025 ski season! My plan is to re-visit each of the Mountain Collective’s 11 U.S. western ski resorts featured on 11USWest.com in a six-week period, skiing only on Mondays & Tuesdays and Thursdays & Fridays.

I’m hoping to travel on Wednesdays & Saturdays, and rest on Sundays (weather permitting). After getting hit March 25th, 2022, I’m not really interested in skiing on weekends when it’s more likely to be busy and crowded! Safety First!!

This will be another dream trip of a lifetime, and I can’t believe I’m going to get to do it again! I plan to start around the second week of January and won’t get back home until almost March!
